Year 5
Welcome to our Year 5 class page!
We hope you've all had a wonderful break - we’re delighted to be welcoming our children back to school for the second half of the spring term. It promises to be another busy one full of exciting events and fascinating learning opportunities. Mrs Fernandez will continue to teach Year 5 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursday afternoons and Miss Jarman will be teaching the class on Wednesdays, Thursday mornings and Fridays. Mrs Radley will also be supporting our learning throughout the week.
We’ll be journeying to South America this term in geography; we'll explore this fascinating region of the world whilst learning about its human and physical features. We'll focus in particular on the sights and sounds of Brazil and link our learning to the unit of work we completed on The Amazon Rainforest earlier in the year. In science, we’ll be focussing on Properties of Materials. The children will study states of matter and group materials based on their properties. We'll also be carrying out some of our own experiments as we investigate reversible and irreversible changes.
As well as our geography and science units, we’ve got a whole host of exciting experiences to look forward to this term, including our weekly music lessons, swimming sessions at Copley Active and our Spanish lessons with Mrs Chapman. We’re also going to visit Ashton Central Mosque as we conclude our investigation in to what life is like for Muslims in Britain today, it will be a great opportunity to ask questions about how and where Muslims worship and find out more about the Five Pillars of Islam. We've also got World Book Day and Fairtrade Fortnight to look forward to...it's certainly going to be a busy term!
Throughout each school day, we’ll be working hard to become more independent and resilient learners who relish a challenge and learn from our mistakes.
Some key information:
Music with Mr Parkes – Monday
Swimming Lessons – Tuesday afternoon
Dance Lesson – Wednesday
Spanish – Thursday
Spelling and maths homework will be set on Seesaw each Wednesday and will be due in on the following Monday. The children will need to bring their reading book and reading record with them to school every day. They are expected to read at least three times a week for 20 minutes or more and have their reading diaries signed by a grown up at home.
The children will also be bringing home our Year 5 Top 10 Reads – throughout the year, they will be given the opportunity to borrow each of the ten books and we really hope that this will help develop an improved reading culture amongst our children. We would really appreciate it if you could ask your children about their Top 10 Reads and encourage them to get reading, they could even read the books with you!
On Tuesday afternoons, the children will attend swimming lessons at Copley Sports Centre. The children will travel by coach, leaving just after lunchtime and returning for 3.30pm. All children must then return to the classroom for a final head count before they are dismissed. Girls must wear a one piece swimsuit and boys must wear swimming trunks or shorts (above the knee). The children will also require a towel.
Please could the children also bring a refillable water bottle to school every day.
Thank you for your continued support,
Miss Jarman, Mrs Fernandez & Mrs Radley
