Welcome to the Year 5 class page!
We’re looking forward to another busy and fun-filled term in Year 5 – we can’t believe the summer term is upon us already! Mrs Flint will continue to teach the class on Mondays and Tuesdays and Miss Jarman will be teaching on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Miss Dyson will support our learning throughout the week.
Our topic work this half term will involve a journey back in time to explore what life was like on The Home Front during World War Two. We’ll begin by studying the causes of the conflict and discovering how Hitler managed to convince a nation to follow him. We’ll then move on to exploring what life was like for those living on The Home Front during the war, we’ll brush up on our historical skills of enquiry and consider what a range of primary and secondary sources can tell us about this fascinating period in history.
A visit to Stockport Air Raid Shelters in June will provide a further opportunity to immerse ourselves into our topic work. The children will take on the role of an evacuee as they explore the shelters and learn about how children just like them managed to keep calm and carry on during the war,
As well as our journey back to the 1940s, we’ve got a wide range of other engaging and challenging experiences to look forward to this term: we’ll be developing our computing skills and using our brand-new individual iPads to present our learning in creative and interesting ways, we’ll be perfecting our Spanish with Senor Taylor on Wednesdays, becoming budding musicians as we continue to learn to play our brass instruments on Tuesdays and attending weekly swimming lessons.
Year 5 will be working hard to become more independent and resilient learners who relish a challenge and learn from our mistakes.
This half term, the children will have PE with Lianne on Wednesday afternoons. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, children will be required to leave their PE kit in school for the full half term. Please put the kit in a labelled plastic bag.
On Tuesday afternoons, the children will attend swimming lessons at Copley Sports Centre. The children will travel by coach, leaving just after lunchtime and returning for 3.30pm. All children must then return to the classroom for a final head count before they are dismissed. Girls must wear a one piece swimsuit and boys must wear swimming trunks or shorts (above the knee). The children will also require a towel.
It is really important that you read with your child as often as possible. Reading books will be sent home and must be returned to school each day in the plastic wallet provided. Please complete the reading record diary to show your child has read their book and is ready for a new one. The children really enjoyed participating in our reading raffle last half term and we intend to continue with the raffle this term too. The children will earn themselves a raffle ticket on a Friday morning if they have read at home and had their reading record signed at least three times during the week. There will then be a weekly prize draw.
For this half term, homework will be set via Seesaw on Wednesday and will include spellings and Maths which will continue to be set via My Maths. Homework needs to be completed by the following Monday.
Please bring a refillable water bottle to school every day.
If you have any concerns or information you want to share with us, please send a message on Seesaw or Dojo and we will reply as soon as possible.
