Year 5
Welcome to our Year 5 class page!
Welcome back to the final half term of the year! We have a busy and exciting few weeks ahead packed full of fantastic learning opportunities. Here’s a quick look at what Year 5 will be getting up to in each subject:
English
We are finishing our work on Letters From The Lighthouse, writing in role and exploring historical content linked to World War Two. Following this, we will move on to My War Diary, where children will write as evacuees, delving into the emotions and experiences of children during the war. In Guided Reading, we’ll continue with Letters From The Lighthouse to develop vocabulary, comprehension and inference skills.
Maths
This term covers a range of important topics:
- Position and Direction
- Coordinates
- Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying & Dividing Decimals
- Negative Numbers
- Converting Units
- Measuring Volume
The children will continue to apply these skills to problem-solving tasks and real-life situations.
Science
Our focus is on Scientific Inventors. The children will learn about David Attenborough and create their own documentaries about living things. They will also investigate forensic science techniques like chromatography, and explore the inspiring work of Margaret Hamilton, who wrote the software that enabled Apollo 11 to land on the Moon.
History
We are diving into World War Two, using a variety of sources to explore life during the Blitz, rationing, and the impact of propaganda. Later, we’ll discuss how the war ended and celebrate with our own VE Day event.
Design Technology (DT)
Children will design, make and evaluate models of WW2 air raid shelters. They’ll begin by sketching and planning their structures before building and testing them.
Computing
This term focuses on branching databases. Children will learn how to sort objects using yes/no questions, create their own databases both physically and digitally, and consider how these are used in real-world situations.
Religious Education (RE)
We will explore how Jews celebrate key festivals such as Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and reflect on the impact of the Holocaust, making cross-curricular links with our history learning.
Spanish
Our Spanish lessons continue on Wednesday mornings, with a focus this half term on vocabulary related to technology and social media.
PE
PE takes place on Tuesdays, with a focus on tennis. Children will be learning and practising a variety of tennis skills throughout the term.
Forest School
We’re very excited to be taking part in Forest School this half term! The children will enjoy working as a team, cooking on a campfire, and building dens as they explore the outdoors.
We are looking forward to a brilliant final half term with lots of engaging activities to round off the year!
