Year 5
Welcome to our Year 5 class page!
We hope you had a wonderful break and are ready for an exciting term ahead. This half-term, Year 5 will be diving into a fantastic range of topics across the curriculum.
In English, we will be reading Letters from the Lighthouse by Emma Carroll, a gripping novel set during World War II. This will help us develop our comprehension skills, particularly inference and deduction. Our writing will be inspired by the book, as we take on the role of evacuees, using drama to bring our ideas to life. Children will have opportunities to write diary entries, instructions, and newspaper reports.
In maths, our focus this term includes perimeter and area, angles, coordinates and translation, and symmetry. We will also work on interpreting line graphs, two-way tables, and timetables.
For PE, our sessions will take place on Tuesday afternoons with specialist coaching from Rebekah. We are also excited to take part in Bikeability, where children will develop their confidence and learn how to cycle safely in our community.
In geography, we will explore our local area, studying maps and identifying key landmarks within a fifty-mile radius of school. Using fieldwork, we will evaluate how well our location meets people’s needs.
Our science lessons will focus on forces, including gravity, friction, air resistance, and water resistance. We will also explore how mechanisms like levers, pulleys, and gears help make work easier.
In design and technology, children will be designing and creating their very own stuffed animals, linking to our historical English topic and World War II learning later in the year.
Computing lessons will introduce coding, where we will work with selection, variables, and repetition to create our own games and apps.
In RE, we will explore the question, “If God is everywhere, why go to a place of worship?” We will learn about different places of worship and discuss their significance for believers.
Our Spanish lessons with Señorita Doodson will focus on learning to talk about ourselves, our families, food, and hobbies.
We are looking forward to a fantastic half-term filled with learning, creativity, and new experiences.
