Autumn 2
It has been a very exciting half term and the children have been super busy! Year 6 have risen to the challenge as part of the Mossley School’s Partnership and took second place in the MSP Maths Challenge. The debating society have met this term to present their argument against the motion: ‘This house believes that going on social media below the age limit should be illegal.’ Our debating team presented a very good argument against Mossley Hollins but on this occasion Mossley Hollins were the winning team. We were very proud of their performance, and we have received some excellent feedback from staff at Mossley Hollins.
We have had a range of visits and visitors in school this term. Year 4 have visited Mossley Methodist Church to take part in Experience Christmas. Year 2 have visited the Fireground Museum in Rochdale to find out more about the Great Fire of London. Year 4 have visited Shree Baratiya Mandal, a Hindu Temple in Ashton as part of their RE unit of work and they have also enjoyed a visit to Mossley Library.
Year 1 have enjoyed a visit to Portland Basin to support their history unit, which focuses on Toys, and they will be looking at and comparing toys today with toys from the Victorian period.
Y6 have been thoroughly involved in a Panto Project with the National Theatre and have been busy learning songs and putting together the script ready to perform at Stalybridge Civic Centre on 10th December. They were brilliant and did a fantastic job!
The whole school really engaged with our first Parliament Week when each class voted for their new Micklehurst Pupil Parliament. We were so impressed with the speeches and presentations that were prepared and executed in each class. We definitely have some budding politicians in the making!
The highlight of Christmas for many of the children are the Christmas performances and the children and staff have worked so hard in putting these together. It was lovely to see all our families in school watching their children shine as EYFS performed The Wriggly Nativity, Key Stage 1 performed The Innkeeper’s Breakfast and Key Stage 2 performed Jack and the Christmas Tree.
We are looking forward to Christmas parties, Christingle and our Carol Service before the end of term.
In Reception the children have been learning about different celebrations. They have looked at seasonal change and enjoyed their Autumn walk. The children have enjoyed learning about Diwali, Bonfire night and Christmas.
Year 1 have been very busy with their science learning. They have been looking at seasons and weather and had great fun making ice crystals and snow! In Design & Technology, the children have designed and made their own hand puppets. They finished off their half term taking part in the Nativity ‘The Innkeepers Breakfast’.
Year 2 have had a fantastic and busy half term! In Computing, the children enjoyed developing their programming skills by using Spheros to navigate different obstacles. This hands-on activity really helped them put their learning into practice in a fun and engaging way.
In English, the class made a surprising discovery when they found more than twenty-two gingerbread men hidden around the classroom. This sparked lots of excitement and inspired the children to write their own creative versions of The Gingerbread Man.
In History, the children visited The Fireground Museum in Rochdale to build on their learning about The Great Fire of London. They behaved brilliantly throughout the trip and were a real credit to the school.
During Parliament Week, many pupils wrote and presented their own speeches as they put themselves forward for the Micklehurst Pupil Parliament. They did a wonderful job, and the week gave them a great insight into how Parliament works and the importance of having a voice.
It has been a busy half term in Year 3! In English the children have been working very hard designing a cake and writing a fantastic set of instructions to make the cake. They have been able to use imperative verbs, adverbs for how and time adverbial phrases.
In Maths, they have been learning their 3, 4 and 8 times tables and their related division facts. They have also been using the column method for both addition and subtraction.
In History, the children have been looking at the Stone Age. They looked at changes during this time, how people survived and food they have would have eaten. In Art, they have been creating their own cave art using charcoal.
In PE, Year 3 have been practising their skills in Athletics and have been focusing on their running, jumping and team work skills. In Science, they have been looking at rocks. The children have been able to group rocks into different groups, looking at the different properties of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, as well as looking at the process of fossilisation.
To celebrate Parliament week, they had class elections and the children shared their speeches with the class detailing why they would like to be the class MPP.
Year 4 have had a fabulous term, full of fun, laughter and learning. They have really enjoyed using Pugs of the Frozen North to inspire their writing. The children wrote wonderful non-chronological reports on pugs and amazing character descriptions. In Geography, they have learned lots about mountains; how they are formed, their features and about some famous mountains across the world. In Science, the children have learned about animals and their habitats, using classification keys to group animals and carrying out research in to endangered animals. In RE, the children have loved learning about celebrations across the key religions, making comparisons between them and finding out about the customs and rituals associated with many of these special events. The children finished the term by making kantha purses. They used running-stitch and cross-stitch to make their purses and learned about different fastenings that can be used for purses.
It’s been a fantastic half term in Year 5 with lots of learning! Children have been getting active with their Strictly Come Dancing moves for Children in Need. They have been challenging their mathematicians with Countdown and having fun with TTRockstars. During parliament week, some children wrote some very inspiring speeches and they all voted and elected their Year 5 MPPs. The children also had a lovely morning and enjoyed their text ‘The Gritterman’ with a hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows.
It’s been an incredibly busy term in Year 6! The children have thoroughly enjoyed venturing outdoors to take part in Forest School – they’ve built dens, enjoyed campfires and even made a range of Christmassy wooden crafts. Our budding actors and actresses have stunned us all this term with their performance of Jack and the Christmas Tree – they loved working with Ellie from the National Theatre to prepare for the show and they wowed everybody at Stalybridge Civic Hall with their compelling performances. The children have also taken part in Safe Squad in order to learn all about personal safety and they were fascinated to learn more about the role of a magistrate from Sean, who came to see us earlier in the term.
